French Briefing: Marshal Ney, 14th October 1805.
The campaign has proceeded very well for the French, with an unbroken
series of successes. However, for you personally things have been less
than happy. Forced to operate under the orders of the vain Murat, three
days ago his decision to leave your 1st Division isolated on the North
bank of the Danube nearly resulted in disaster. Fortunately, General
Dupont and his superb troops covered themselves in glory in defeating
the main Austrian army at Haslach-Jungingen. However, your Corps is now
all on the south side of the Danube, whilst the Austrian army eludes
Napoleon’s planned encirclement by making for Bohemia via the north
bank. Back under the gaze of the Emperor, you have been instructed to
storm the bridges over the Danube at Elchingen, allowing the army to
block the Austrian line of retreat. All the frustrations of the past
week have built up, and now the enemy will surely suffer the wrath of
Ney!
The position at Elchingen is strong, and could be difficult to assault
if the Austrians show any kind of spirit. The convent dominates the
ridge line, and is clearly a well constructed strong point. In
addition, there is only the single crossing point. Although your troops
have driven off the troops guarding the bridges, it will not be easy to
deploy your whole corps. Indeed, given the heroic sacrifice of Dupont
and his Division, you are not inclined to risk both remaining Divisions
unless you really have to.
The game starts with you, Loison and the 1st Brigade/2nd Division
deployed on the North bank of the Danube, anywhere within 12“ of the
river, with orders that you specify. The rest of your troops will begin
crossing according to the order you define. The reserve artillery is
currently deployed at point A on the map, having helped defeat the
enemy guarding the bridges.
