11th October, 1805. Haslach, Austria.
General Dupont.
The Grand Armee is about to confront the main Austrian army, hitherto
stationary at the entrenched camp at Ulm. It is believed that to escape
the Emperor’s clutches, the Austrians have fled to the south bank of
the Danube. Therefore, the Grand Army has followed, leaving your
command on the North bank to follow up and trap the remnants in Ulm.
This morning you reached the village of Haslach,, a short ride from
Ulm. Your cavalry reported large numbers of the enemy in the
neighbourhood. This you have confirmed- at least 20,000 by your
estimate, still in the entrenched camp! And they have seen you, too.
You have decided that to retreat will only encourage the enemy to
attack with vigour, and so with a sense of Gallic élan and audacity,
you have ordered your troops to deploy for battle, hoping to convince
the Austrians that you are the vanguard of a larger force.
Your objective is to hold the line of Thalfingen-Haslach-Jungingen
until nightfall (20 game moves), whence you hope to make your escape.
The villages are of normal construction, with the exception of the
church at Jungingen, which could be made into a formidable position. If
you lose control of Haslach, you have no route of retreat.
To increase the number of units at your disposal, you have concentrated
the grenadier and carabinier companies of the infantry battalions to
form an elite unit, with a formidable component of sappers.
Marchand can be used a detached commander if you wish, and you may
distribute the artillery and Hussars to the infantry brigades as you
wish.
